About: My MMFT Designation

What does MMFT stand for? What’s in a name? I am a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapist. The title implies marital and family therapy which yes, we do, but we are CLINICALLY trained (from an ACCREDITED institution), to see individual clients too.

Our branch of psychotherapy takes a RELATIONAL, person-in-CONTEXT perspective. We HOLISTICALLY consider all relationship and societal structures regardless of who is physically in the therapy room. We are trained with a systemic diversity-affirmative lens.

Though familiar with the DSM (diagnostic & statistical manual), we are NON-PATHOLOGIZING mental health professionals who do not diagnose or label. If you have a diagnosis, what our work might look like is exploring your personal experience of what fits/doesn’t fit and the impact of it on you and your relationships.

Here in Canada, MMFT’s don’t prescribe medication to treat symptoms. This doesn’t mean we oppose modern medicine. Our role is to DIG DEEPER and dialogue with you. MMFT’s aim to help you expand your internal and external resources. We aim to support you in exploring the IMPACT on your mental health from your social location (where you situate yourself based on age, race, class, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity, mobility, country of origin, etc.).

MMFT’s work collaboratively in the community as ADVOCATES to dismantle systems of oppression as part of our lens of mutual influence and interconnectedness.

I consider myself an ongoing learner of nuance, appreciator of duality and intersectionality, awareness of the calls to action around truth and reconciliation.

I am committed to doing my own personal work to situation myself around privilege and oppression, race, age, ethnicity, gender, sex, social class, and tracking my own historical legacy of trauma in my family of origin through therapy and supervision.
